Why Your Jewelry Is Turning Green and What to Do About It

By The Diva Box·February 15, 2026

Have you noticed a green mark on your skin where you wear a bracelet or ring? Or perhaps the jewelry itself has turned greenish? This is a very common experience with fashion jewelry, and it does not necessarily mean the jewelry is low quality. Here is the science behind it and what you can do.

Why Does Jewelry Turn Skin Green?

The green color on your skin is caused by a chemical reaction between the metal in your jewelry and the acids in your sweat. Copper is the most common culprit. When copper oxidizes, it creates copper salts (a green compound called verdigris) that can transfer to your skin. Many gold-plated and silver-plated fashion jewelry pieces have a copper or brass base, which is why this happens.

Is It Harmful?

The green stain is generally harmless and washes off easily with soap and water. However, if your skin becomes irritated, red, or itchy, you may have a sensitivity or mild allergy to copper or nickel, which is a different matter.

Which Jewelry Is Most Likely to Turn Green?

  • Rings (especially on fingers that tend to sweat)
  • Bracelets worn on the wrist
  • Waist chains worn against the skin
  • Any piece in direct contact with skin in warm or humid conditions

How to Prevent the Green Reaction

  • Apply a thin layer of clear nail polish to the inside of rings and bracelets that touch your skin. This creates a barrier between the metal and your skin.
  • Remove jewelry before exercising, swimming, or any activity that causes sweating.
  • Keep jewelry dry and wipe it down after wearing.
  • Choose pieces with better plating quality, such as gold-plated over brass rather than copper.

Proper Storage Slows Oxidation

Storing jewelry in airtight pouches or boxes slows down oxidation and keeps pieces looking fresh longer. Read our full storage guide at How to Store Jewelry Properly.
